You Can Replace your Old Propane Refrigerator Cooling Unit Yourself

If your old propane refrigerator cooling unit (often called cooling coil) has failed but your refrigerator still looks nice, you can replace the cooling unit with a new one for about half the cost of replacing the whole fridge.

All that's required is some basic tools and and two people (one to hold the new cooling unit and the other to put the screws in). The screws that hold the outside part of the assembly are removed from the interior evaporator plate in both the refrigerator and freezer sections. The old cooling unit is foamed in so to free it we use a drywall saw. This part can be done with the doors removed and the fridge face down, but to install the new cooling unit the refrigerator will need to be upright. One reasonably strong person will need to hold the new cooling unit upright at the back of the fridge (resting on a steel-toed boot or towel wrapped 2x4's to shim and adjust the height) while a smaller person replaces the interior screws from inside the fridge. Getting the holes to line up is the hardest part. This is not a complete tutorial but you get the idea.

If you're not sure if your gas fridge can be repaired or not, or if you would like a quote for the part, give us a call today. We can help!
